What is the Key Learning Center?

  The Key Learning Center is Western North Carolina's premier teacher training and outreach program. It is the Community Outreach Component of the  Key School at Carolina Day School.

 Our Mission: The Key Learning Center serves as a premier community resource and training and outreach center for educators, professionals, parents, and students in the Western North Carolina region regarding language-based learning differences/dyslexia.

The Key Learning Center at Carolina Day School offers both one day professional development programs though a Saturday Seminar Series and Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Training Courses.

 


 

One Week Multisensory Reading Program for Students

Could your rising 1st through 3rd grader use an opportunity to keep reading and spelling skills fresh this summer? 
Participating in this one week program is a great skill sharpener and self-confidence builder. 
 

Dates:

June 24, 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. for individualized assessment
June 28 - July 2 - Students participate in a 45-minute lesson each day*. 
(Lessons are scheduled between 8:00 and 10:30 a.m.)
*Students must attend every session.
 

Cost:

$60 per student.  This fee includes 5 lessons, an individual informal assessment, and a progress report.

Multisensory Math I is a 30 hour course designed for general and special education teachers at the elementary levels, home school educators, and remediation teachers in middle and high school.

The 10-day summer course, Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) is research-based. The training program contains explicit teacher instruction that includes all of the five components required in a quality reading education program:

1.  Phonological Awareness
2.  Phonics
3.  Fluency
4.  Vocabulary Instruction
5.  Reading Comprehension

During the training, teachers learn how to administer a series of informal diagnostic assessments which are used to design instruction that is structured and systematic. The structure of language is studied and applied to teaching reading. Teachers learn how to implement a reading program that is explicit, structured and multisensory.

What is Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE)?

MSLE refers to an approach to teaching the language skills of reading and writing. It involves several key components. MSLE is considered to be essential for effectively teaching students with language-based learning differences. Its components are research-based.
