First Graders Explore the Urban Trail

First Grade is studying about the history of Asheville as their first social studies unit. On September 20th, they went on the Urban Trail in Asheville. The Urban Trail is a walking tour of downtown Asheville and educates the children about Asheville's history. The children learned about many of the landmarks. When they returned to class they drew and labeled a picture of their favorite stop. As a conclusion to this unit, Mr. Doug Sherry came in and discussed different maps with the children including a map of downtown Asheville. The children were able to locate the different landmarks they saw on the Urban Trail.

This is the Elizabeth Blackwell stop on the trail. Elizabeth Blackwell is known as the first woman in America to earn a medical degree. She spent time in Asheville.
