Quick Pix As always, it has been a busy week at Carolina Day. Last week the sixth graders were a big part of Asheville's political scene as they hosted a city candidates' forum. All of the city council and mayoral candidates showed up and were grilled by our students for over an hour. Tammy Watford, a WLOS-TV news reporter, served as moderator. The first photo is of Ms. Watford with Jason and Natalie.
And here's mayor-elect Terry Bellamy meeting students after the forum. Read the "Citizen-Times" article. Recently parent Jack Cecil visited the fourth grade to talk about his amazing experiences as a young man when he climbed six of the seven highest mountain peaks in the world. He showed the equipment necessary and shared slides of mountain adventures from six continents. Fourth-grade son Hugh modeled his heavy-duty outerwear!
Dru Alexander's seventh-grade social studies/language arts class has been studying colonial American history. They have just completed an interesting project--researching, designing, and producing a travel brochure meant to entice would-be travelers (in colonial times) to visit, and possibly move to, one of the colonies. The brochures are currently on display in Dru's classroom.
The first graders recently took a field trip to the Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Center in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard. The Cradle of Forestry is the site of the first forestry school in America - the Biltmore Forest School - founded in 1898 by Dr. Carl Schenck.
Follow this link to learn more about the Cradle of Forestry. This happened a few weeks ago, but we have been urged to share this photo with our readers. Here is pre-K assistant Patty Baer acting out "Napping House" by Audrey Wood. This performance was caught on pajama day in the pre-kindergarten.
