As always, it has been a busy week at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

If this is physics, it must be time for the fifth-grade egg drop? Judy Beck, a professor of physics at UNC-Asheville came on Monday to present a physics lecture in the context of the annual fifth-grade egg drop competition. Dr. Beck presented an interesting program for fourth- and fifth-grade students. This program was sponsored by the Parent Council's Science & Math Committee. Look for a feature article in the May issue of Bell Notes.

The Key lower school students have been studying the Civil War. Byron Hovey and Chris Roberts came to the Key School on Tuesday to discuss the life of a soldier (on both sides) during the War Between the States. They are re-enactors and travel throughout the region portraying both the Federals and the Confederates.

The fifth graders have been presenting their Orbital Studies science projects this week. Each student has a topic and chooses how best to present the material to his or her classmates. Check out the projects in the hallway next to the fifth-grade classrooms.

Eighth-grade social studies classes have been studying forms of government. Groups were formed to write and rehearse skits to perform to demonstrate a variety of governments. The audience of eighth graders and Mr. Broshar didn't have any trouble figuring out which was which.

The fifth graders participated in their annual "My Side of the Mountain" Day program on the last day of school before spring break. The students had read the Jean George book about Sam Gribley and his year spent living "off the land" by himself. The students enjoyed the day off-campus recreating the life of Sam and the year he spent in the mountains. They made fires with flint and steel, built shelters, constructed animal traps, and enjoyed the fruits of their labor by getting to drink hot chocolate and eat s'mores.

Also before spring break, actually a week before, Susan White's ninth-grade English students had the opportunity to work with a professional actor from the North Carolina Stage Company. Willie Repoley, actor and director with NC Stage Company, spent five days with the ninth graders working on a scene from "Romeo & Juliet." Students memorized a scene which they brought to life on the last day of the program.

Is it Friday yet? This lower school student says it is.
