As always, it has been a busy week at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

On Monday, eighth-grade students did some of the teaching in the sixth grade. The sixth graders have been studying genetics, and it so happened that at the same time the eighth graders have been studying cloning and "designer" babies. So, the eighth graders came in to present information from both points of view on these topics. It was an interesting discussion.

Mardi Gras isn't exactly an event celebrated at Carolina Day, but this fifth grader dressed up for Fat Tuesday! Perhaps it was from all the influence we've had from our New Orleans students?

Today, Steve Dunnington spoke to a large gathering of upper school students about his work as a product development specialist with Moog Music. Mr. Dunnington talked about the history of electronic musical instruments and demonstrated one of the very first--a Theremin as well as a modern day Moog synthesizer. Several students remained for a question and answer session over a pizza lunch. Moog Music is based in Asheville. This program was sponsored by the Math and Science Committee of the Parent Council and was organized by Karen Selz.

Pre-K students love to play with trucks, but this one got carried away. Actually, we were having a load (a BIG load) of dirt delivered for the baseball field.

And speaking of baseball, the spring sports season is underway. Click here to see schedules for all spring sports.

Congratulations to the Upper School Science Olympiad team. They came in third place in the regionals held this past Saturday. This sets them up for a trip to the state-level competition coming up soon.

School: It's not just for kids anymore. These moms were attending a computer class taught by Debbie Lanier, the lower school technology coordinator.

Tammy Watford, WLOS reporter, was on campus this week to film a segment on classroom pets and the hairless rats in the second grade. The story was actually suggested to Ms. Watford by our own fifth-grade Carolina Kids' News reporter-Ellie. Ms. Watford was so impressed by a story Ellie did for CKN that she wanted to come out and see for herself. This "Never Stop Learning" segment should air on Channel 13 early next week.

Middle school PE teacher Mark Strasser invited Joe'tse Adams in to teach a breakdancing class to all middle school boys. Click here to see a slide show from the sixth grade boys' class. It was a wild hour, but moms--not to worry--no one suffered any injuries.

And yesterday was an historic occasion in the Middle School. The middle school boys' basketball team (undefeated in the regular season) took on a rag-tag collection of faculty members in a traditional end-of-season game. The faculty members, holding a commanding win-loss lead over past boys' teams, came out to play and to win. Zac, normally the boys' team manager, served as coach for his team. It was a wild game, but in the end, the faculty went down in defeat.
