As always, it has been a busy week at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

Last Friday, UNCA Professor Rebecca Bruce visited with the third graders as part of the Parent Council's Math & Science Committee lecture series. Professor Bruce discussed robots including what makes a robot a robot. Then the third graders had the opportunity to play with some. Professor Bruce was joined by several college students enrolled in the mechatronics curriculum that combines computer science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Look for a complete article about this event in the May issue of Bell Notes. Thanks to Karen Selz for arranging this exciting program.

Check out these fifth graders caught enjoying some math out in the hall. Who says math isn't fun?

A few weeks ago, the upper school's Roots & Shoots chapter held an evening of presentations to raise money for a refuge for orphaned chimpanzees in the Congo. The club raised about $3,000 for the project. They hope to raise an additional $2,000 to meet their goal.

"Mbote mingi!" Upper School Spanish 4 students take a break from their literature studies to spend a day learning about Africa, specifically the Congo, where teacher Gail Wallace served two years with the Peace Corps. Students sampled a typical meal (luku with mantete, or the typical cooked cereal with a squash-seed dish) while looking at slides and hearing about life in rural Bandundu. All en
espoñol, of course.

The Upper School was buzzing with excitement last Friday in anticipation of the Second Annual Priscilla's Stylish Picture Show Film Festival. Six original films written by, filmed by, acted in, and produced by upper school students were presented at a gala evening which included a pizza dinner and popcorn during the show.

A packed house of students, parents, and faculty attended this fun evening. Attendees, as members of the "Academy," all got to vote for their favorites in several categories.

And this Tuesday during morning meeting, Kathryn Alexander and Gillian Knicely presided at the awarding of the "Oscars." Gillian, who took charge of the film festival, and Kathryn are both members of the Literary Club which sponsored the program.

Eli Samuels picks up his Oscar for "Best Musical Score" for La Fesca Ayuda.

"Best Picture" Oscar went to Adam Serfas, Mason Walters, and Sam Taylor for Ropa Interior, a hilarious infomercial about life-changing underwear. Yes, these boys are all seniors!

Fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Key Book Club invited noted author Mark Levin over to Greenberry's to discuss what an author needs to do to publish a book. Mr. Levin shared his experiences and his published books with the captive audience. Can't you see the look of excitement on their faces?
