As always, it has been a busy few days at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

Drumming is still a popular activity in the Key School. These middle school students have been enjoying a chance to rattle the windows with some great beats.

Steve Longenecker visited a couple of classes this week to share Frightful, a peregrine falcon, with students. On Monday Steve visited Dora Nelson's AP environmental science class. Students had a chance to see this magnificent bird up close.

Steve has federal and state licenses to keep and care for raptors and other wildlife that can't be returned to the wild. He travels to area schools, colleges, and camps to enlighten audiences about these birds.

Steve returned to CDS on Tuesday to share Frightful with the fifth grade classes. The fifth graders are currently reading My Side of the Mountain about a boy who lives in the wilderness for a year. In the story, Sam Gribley captures and trains a wild peregrine to help him hunt. (We do not recommend that any of you try this at home.)

By the way, Steve Longenecker once taught at Carolina Day--back when it was Asheville Country Day School. In fact, Steve taught the father of one of the current fifth-grade students.

As a photographer, it's always a pleasure to sneak into a classroom unnoticed and snap photos of the students hard at work. Yesterday I visited Rachael Ide's third-grade classroom. They were reading about El dorado, the city of gold.

It was the end of the day for these Key School youngsters. These two are busy getting a head start on homework.

These four were supposed to be getting a head start on homework, but the excitement of a photographer showing up proved to be too much of a diversion.

And these students in the next two photos are waiting to be picked up. They'll do their homework at home.

This has been American Education Week. The upper school student government hosted a luncheon in honor of the upper school teachers, staff, and a few invited guests. In addition to serving a delicious meal, the students prepared a special place mat for each guest including a photo and quotes from their students.

A proud artist. This third grader was happy to show off his wonderful cat sculpture he had created in art class.
