Quick Pix
Recent Happenings from Around the School
May 31, 2007

As always, it has been a busy few days at Carolina Day.
Here's just a sampling of some of what you might have missed.

This is the last edition of Quick Pix for this year. We hope you've enjoyed getting to see just some of what happens each week at CDS. While you often see me taking photographs around the campus, please know that we have several other contributing photographers throughout the year. A special thanks to Ashly Maag, Phyllis Armstrong, Libby Roland, Candy Hardy, and Maggie McLaney for their ongoing contributions of photographs. And of course, a thank you to other teachers and parents for their contributions. Our office alone took over 8,000 photos this year and had over 2,000 others submitted.

Have a wonderful summer.

The fourth and fifth graders held their annual Math Day event last week. It's a wonderful way to celebrate math with a variety of games and events.

The Key School first- through third-grade team presented their research papers last week. The students did great research and had fascinating props to bring these sea creatures to life.

This guy is showing a model of a giant squid.

This piece of paper shows the length of a giant squid. It was about 60 feet long. Yikes! And did you know that giant squid have teeth on their tongues which they use to shred their food?

These boys made a great white shark for their presentation.

And these guys were proud of their man-of-wars.

The fifth graders held their annual end-of-the-year concert last week. The students showed off their year's worth of hard work in music. At the end of their show they were joined by their kindergarten buddies. It was a touching way to finish their performance.

Finally, a really BIG time to celebrate. The Nash Athletic Center was packed last Friday morning for our twentieth commencement exercises. Each senior is given a few moments in the spotlight to give a little personal speech of thanks before being presented with a hard-earned diploma. This year the upper school administration was prepared for crying moms (and dads) as they handed out little packets of tissue paper to anxious and excited parents and friends as they entered for the big event.

and related activities.

It's a tradition. To celebrate their last "moving-up" day, the fifth graders got to spray their names on the soccer field yesterday. Don't worry, they were supervised! And, it's washable paint. It won't be there long. Now if we could only get some rain!

A group of eighth graders recently returned from an international educational adventure. One group spent their time in Spain while this pictured group was in France. They spent a lot of their time living with a host family and attending school.

Wednesday was Celebrate America Day in the kindergarten. But not only did they celebrate America, they celebrated the rest of the world as well. Students went around the two classrooms and studio and completed activities about the seven continents. Then they lined up for a true Americana lunch and finished with some great games.

Middle school students have been enjoying a little end-of-year frivolity themselves. These girls in seventh-grade PE class loved the opportunity to slide down a sheet of plastic one day last week. Each class has had its turn. Now they're enjoying exams.

Parting Snaps...

Are these kindergartners ready for the end of the year?

You bet!

A familiar view on field trip days.

Another fifth-grade tradition — cleaning out lockers, though it looks like there was more horsing around than cleaning going on.

And I have no idea what this guy is saying except, take my picture!

And that's it for 2006-2007. See you next fall! Have a safe summer.
