Quick Pix As always, it has been a busy few days at Carolina Day. It was Shakespeare time in eighth-grade English classes. Here Mr. Broshar is instructing his class in some of the nuances of Midsummer Night's Dream. They totally "got it."
These eighth graders were in another class studying the Bard as well. The photographer wasn't quite sure what the boas were for.
Ms. Middleton's students at the Key have been reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH in reading comp classes. They built their own rat mazes in teams and yesterday invited the rat "Mrs. Frisby" to come in and test them out. She did very well. The students and the teacher loved her so much they have decided to keep her.
Mrs. Lareau's kindergarten class has been studying the four presidents pictured on Mt. Rushmore. The fourth graders have been studying all of the presidents and first ladies and preparing class presentations. So when Mrs. Lareau found this out, she had to invite at least one of those Mt. Rushmore presidents into her class.
Here's Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, making a presentation this morning to the kindergartners.
They were quite impressed. Teddy was very well prepared.
An uncanny resemblance.
Just a few minutes ago the upper school student body came together to enjoy a Speech & Debate Team pep rally. Anders Joura hosted the rally and introduced several students who performed various pieces. The team heads off to the Raleigh area tomorrow morning for the state debate tournament.
The senior members of the debate team introduced themselves. Many have been on the team for most of their upper school years.
Ms. Broderick's and Mrs. Stokes's reading comprehension class just completed a study of gods and goddesses. They held a banquet today to showcase what they learned. How about this for a toga party!
Yesterday sixth grade students were doing some pretty impressive work in science. Ms. Weidner's classes were doing DNA extraction. No doubt one of these girls will become a crime scene investigator in a few years.
Recently the Key School's Ultimate Frisbee physical education class teamed up with the middle school's Ultimate Frisbee exploratory to spend an afternoon playing disc golf at the Black Mountain Disc Golf Course. While the golden egg of a hole-in-one eluded them for the day, birdies flew about the park. There were many trips to the river to retrieve discs that did not agree with the wind. Much fun, laughter, and learning was heard that day.
Key School fourth and fifth graders had a great field trip this week to the WLOS news center. They have been studying weather in their exploratory group with Ms. Perez and she had arranged for her students to meet weatherman Mike Cuevas.
Here they are seen taking turns in front of the "green screen."
Mr. Cuevas points out that when a student stands in front of the green screen wearing green--only her head can be seen bobbing around on the TV monitor. It was quite comical.
The entire group poses with Mr. Cuevas. They were invited to do something most people don't get to do--watch a live broadcast of the noon news.
Hanging around in the Upper School...
