I was born and lived in Michigan until I was eight years old. My next four years were spent in California when my father was going to medical school. The family then moved to Asheville, North Carolina where I have lived since. (Except for college and graduate school for my husband.) I graduated from Southern College in Collegedale, Tennessee. Southern is a small (about 2200 students), private liberal arts school. I majored in mathematics and minored in physics. The Head of the Mathematics Department has been a life-long friend. During college, I worked in the math lab.
My first teaching job was at Redlands Junior Academy in southern California, a K-10 school. I taught Math 7 & 8, Algebra I, and Algebra II for three years. My daughter, Erin was born in California the summer her dad finished medical school. We moved back to the Carolinas were I was mom and a volunteer teacher at The Health Adventure for eight years.
I took an interim position at Hendersonville High School teaching algebra II and trigonometry. The following year, 1984, I accepted a mathematics position at St. Genevieve-Gibbons Hall School and have remained teaching mathematics (and loving it!) to high schoolers after the merger with Asheville Country Day School in 1987. I started the
Upper School Math Team in 1992. (See below). I completed a Masters Degree in Mathematics Education from Western Carolina University in 1993.
In 1995, I married Kirk Hubbard, a wonderful man with a history of geology degree from University of Florida, running a tennis school in Florida, and being a co-owner and operator of Ridgetop Cabins (secluded, rustic mountain cabins off the Parkway at Milepost 342).
Kirk and I enjoy watching Carolina Day sports events, taking pictures, playing with Cassie, hiking, spending time at our lake cottage, and spending time with my father, brother, and my daughter Erin. My dad is a retired family physician who is a true Renaissance man with a passion for computers. Brother Tom is in tourism and marketing of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Cassie is a yellow Lab who is a love bug. Erin, the joy of my life, is a K-1 teacher in Georgia.
