Where Ancient Parrots Pray

by Eileen McCabe

Miss McCabe's poetry book, Where Ancient Parrots Pray, is now available. Only five hundred books were printed so you do not want to miss out on this wonderful opportunity to share in the creative work of one of our beloved teachers.

This is not just your typical poetry book. In addition to the more than 80 poems, the cover art is an original painting by artist Anne Hughes. Another special touch with this printing is the inclusion of a ribbon to mark your favorite poem.

To Emily

So I auction my mind
And go “Public like the frog”—
Let me tell you why—
These words are like caged birds
Dying to be heard
Let them fly free
If they any beauty bring
Or a bit of wisdom sing
Let them have wings—

About the Author:
Irish already, then tutored by a certain wildness in the bright shadows of Western North Carolina, Eileen McCabe is a person you meet once and never forget. Almost at once you see she sees differently. As teacher and tutor herself, she delayed writing poetry until her 74 th year in favor of just “being.”

Only once, in 1986, McCabe shared in words her clear delight in place and people when commissioned by her headmaster to write An Uncommon School, the history of Country Day in the mountains of Asheville where she has always lived.

But perhaps that “place” where ancient parrots pray also was in the mind of theologian Abraham Heschel when he said that “just to be is a blessing…just to live is holy.” Reality is a great poet. A lover of life and of words and of honesty, here McCabe the poet writes finally of a place--to her long-known, unique—and sometimes surprising.
