PHILOSOPHY OF THE CDS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

Middle School (7th and 8th grades): a participatory program based on enrollment and equitable competition among opponents. Team number caps will be in effect. Participants not on the school team would be encouraged to seek experiences in a Y league or a recreational league. These student - athletes will be encouraged to play the following year. Carolina Day School also provides a strong intramural program to handle overflow numbers in this situation.

Junior High (7th, 8th, and 9th graders): in the event that a junior high team is not the next team in line for varsity competition, the philosophy would remain the same as the middle school. In the event that a junior high team is the next team in line below varsity competition, the philosophy would follow the junior varsity format.

Junior Varsity (8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders): selection at this level will be determined by skills and abilities. There will be a team selection process (i.e. tryouts). When team caps are exceeded, students are encouraged to participate in recreational or church leagues or seek other extra-curricular activities within the Carolina Day School program. The team selection process is handled personally and each student is advised on a one-on-one basis.
