  From Staff ReportsTennis State Tournament

After a rain delay to start Friday, we took the courts at about 9:30 am.  We only had one player who had a first round bye, so 5 out of six players had the first match of the day.  Of those 5 we advanced four, number 1, 2, 3, and 6 singles.  In the second round Andrew Shea, Ben Burt, and Aaron Saenger put their competition away and advanced to the semi-finals.

In doubles play, the number one and two doubles teams put up great fights, but came up short in the first round competition.  Garner Keiser and Eric Christianson won in straight sets to advance to the 2nd round, in which they were eliminated in a hard fought match.

On Saturday, Aaron Saenger the number one seed at the number 5 singles position made quick work of his opponent winning in straight sets.  Andrew Shea won a great match in the third set 6-2.  Ben Burt played very well but came up just short losing 7-5, 7-5.

In the championship both Aaron and Shea played great matches but were not able to defeat their opponents both placing second in their singles draws.

Carolina Day finished fourth place as a team with Cape Fear in first, St. Davids in second, and CAA rivals Spartanburg Day in 3rd.

Tennis Team Finishes 4th at States

Monday, May 19th, 2008

The tennis team finished 4th at this year’s NCISAA 2A Tennis Championships. The Cats traveled to Wilmington, NC to defend their 2A title. Repeating is difficult and the Cats knew this going in…they would have to play their best in order to compete for the title.

After the first day, the Cats were right in it. 5 of 6 Cats advanced in singles while 1 of 3 Cat teams advanced on the doubles side.

The second day brought more sun and more good tennis. The second round sees 3 of 5 Cats advancing in singles. Unfortunately, our doubles team falls.

The third day brought sun and the realization the Cats would not repaet as 2A Champs. Some teams would have packed it in, but not the Cats. Our three singles players hit the court and left all they had on it: 2 of 3 Cats advance to the finals!

In the finals, our two seniors, Andrew Shea and Aaron Saenger, played their best, but fell short.

The Cats failed to repeat, but finished 4th overall. The team had a great year and continued a tradition of excellence. Congrats to the team and to Coach Southern.

The tennis team looks to repeat as the NCISAA 2A Champion this morning in Wilmington, NC. The Cats are on the court as this is being written - we hope to provide updates throughout the day.

Best of success to the Cats!

Cats Beat Spartanburg Day

Friday, May 9th, 2008

The Cats upset the Griffins of Spartanburg Day yesterday afternoon in their final CAA match of the year. The Cats were leading 5-1 before the match was called due to inclement weather. This win by the Cats denied Spartanburg Day the CAA championships.

The Cats begin preparation for the NCISAA state tournament being held next week in Wilmington, NC.

Seniors Finish Strong

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Senior Cat athletes involved in baseball, soccer, and tennis were recognized yesterday during our contests with the visiting Blues of Asheville School. Seniors on the above three teams have led their teams to state championships, earned all-state and all-conference accolades and have been instrumental in mentoring their younger counterparts. Perhaps the most important quality left behind from this group has been their commitment to the Carolina Day School community.

Seniors, thanks for all of your hard work and dedication.

Here are the scores from yesterdays’ action:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cats 3      Blues 1

Varsity Baseball:        Cats 2      Blues 4

Varsity Tennis:           Cats 6      Blues 3
