Dr. Beverly Sgro is Head of School at Carolina Day School in Asheville, North Carolina. Before coming to Carolina Day in 1999, she was Interim Head of School at Collegiate School in Richmond. From 1994-1998, Dr. Sgro served as Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia, serving in the Cabinet of Governor George Allen. In this position she had oversight of all public schools, 16 public colleges and universities,23 community colleges, five state museums, the State Library of Virginia, two teaching hospitals and medical schools, and numerous other cultural and educational agencies and programs. The budget for the Education Secretariat accounted for almost half of the state expenditures. Prior to her move to Richmond, Dr. Sgro worked at Virginia Tech in Student Affairs and completed her career there as Dean of Students and an adjunct faculty member, teaching graduate courses in educational research and evaluation. Early in her career she was a speech pathologist and teacher of pre-school children with severe hearing losses. She earned her bachelor of science degree at Texas Woman's University and her masters and doctorate at Virginia Tech. In 1999 she was appointed by Governor Jim Gilmore of Virginia to serve on the fourteen-member Board of Visitors (Trustees) for Virginia Tech. In Asheville, she served on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. Dr. Sgro is currently a member of the Foxcroft School Board of Trustees, where she previously served as President of the Board. She is listed in Who's Who in America and has membership in numerous honorary societies and organizations. |
