Financial AidCollege costs are already staggering and they continue to soar. While it is a bit of a myth that there is money "just floating around out there," there is significant assistance available. There are two types of aid: need based and merit. Many schools give only need based aid, and the best of those are able to meet 100% of demonstrated need and do it blindly. Many schools give merit aid as well. Students are very often considered for merit aid by virtue of their application, but some schools require a separate application or nomination process. There are two forms for need based aid: Profile (institutional) and FAFSA (federal). While it is true that most CDS families don't qualify for federal aid, they still might very well qualify for institutional aid. Families should apply for aid and let someone else decide if they qualify; families should not make that decision themselves. Do not let cost limit where you apply. Cost might determine where you go, but do not let it determine where you apply.
