Recent Happenings from Around the School

Every so often we'll bring you a series of photos of some of the ordinary and not-so-ordinary events that take place at Carolina Day School every day. We're a busy place.

To the untrained eye this pile of stuff might look like junk. But it's all treasure to the first graders who transformed these materials into amazingly creative things during their annual machines day.

The Friends of the Library sponsored a visit by James E. Lyle, an author of comic books. Mr. Lyle spent time with each of the sixth-grade cores about his life as a freelance illustrator, the beginnings of comic books in the United States, and the "grammar" of comic books. Mr. Lyle led the students through the basics of brainstorming and the students gave him their ideas of a perfect super hero. The artist took their ideas and created a new character right before their very eyes. Mr. Lyle ended by having the students sign their collective new piece and he autographed a copy of one of his illustrations for each student.

The student government in the Upper School recently pulled off a surprise for the upper school students. Here Tinnie Salzano is shown getting the students to hide the surprise behind student government members. On cue student body president Davis Graham led the students in singing a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" in honor of all the students who celebrate summer birthdays. And then cupcakes were served to the hungry and appreciative students.

PK teacher Cathy Walters recently returned from Alaska where she was competing as one of three finalists in the Target Teacher on the (Iditarod) Trail program. Here Cathy poses with Bullseye - the Target mascot.

No ordinary stretching. These middle school girls are enjoying a "yoga" class outdoors as their exploratory choice.

A bunch of Key middle school students participated in their own Egg Drop competition on a blustery day a couple of weeks ago. It was a great way to practice the process of design. It was a crowd-pleasing event with the entire Key School showing up to watch and cheer on the designers.

It's hard to pass by the athletic fields without seeing kids, teachers, and even parents walking or running around the perimeter. Most of them are participating in the lower school's 100-Mile Club which encourages everyone to walk and/or run one hundred miles before the end of the school year. The third- through fifth-grade program is a tradition at Carolina Day.

At the beginning of the year the upper school student government sponsored a contest to design a "Willie the Wildcat" image for use on a special t-shirt. Melissa C, a senior, had the winning design and she is shown painting her CDS Wildcat as a mural in an alcove in the Upper School. Josh D., a sophomore, had the second-place entry. Both images are being printed on the t-shirt which is in production and will be delivered soon.

The fifth graders have pen pals in Ghana and recently had the opportunity to have a special guest from that country come and tell them about his land and the people and culture.

March 14 is Pi Day (3.14) around the world--a lesser known event that doesn't escape the attention of the middle school math teachers at CDS. The eighth graders use this special day (though they decided to hold their event on St. Patrick's Day) to get together with their third-grade buddies. The day started off with some eighth graders reading original limericks about "pi" that they had entered into a middle school math department contest.

Shelby (below) reads her first-prize entry...

There once was an old lullaby
That spoke of the meaning of pi
Three point one four
And so many more
They sung 'til they were bleary-eyed.

And here are some of the other students who got to read their winning limericks.

And then it was time to horse around with their buddies.

And finally it was time to eat some pie on Pi Day. This guy is happier than he looks.

These Key middle school girls got to come to school in their PJs recently as a treat for completing their book talk program.

It's March Madness. Guess who these guys are pulling for?

Spring sports season is underway. Look for a photo gallery of spring sports pictures soon. In the meantime, here's some early-season action from middle school soccer and varsity baseball.

Parting Snaps...

Look for more photos soon.
