Out & About Every so often we'll bring you a series of photos of some of the ordinary and not-so-ordinary events that take place at Carolina Day School every day. We're a busy place. Upper school teacher Joanne Bartsch made a guest appearance in the second grade recently. She brought a sampling of fossils that you hopefully read about in the December issue of Bell Notes. The kids were excited to get to see and handle these amazing artifacts.
The eighth graders were treated to a visit by members of the Asheville Fire Department as part of their science class. Former NYC fire battalion chief and current CDS middle school teacher Joe Krebbs helped handle questions. You'll read an article about this experience in the February issue of Bell Notes.
These Key School students were enjoying reading and acting out poems in one of their classes.
Fourth and fifth graders had the experience of a lecture from Professor Kaplan as part of the Parent Council Math & Science Committee lecture series. He was quite animated and the students enjoyed his talk.
These Key students were enjoying making some mighty impressive sand castles recently while basking in the sun on one of our unusually mild days.
The Wildcat basketball teams recently sponsored a food drive as part of their series of games against a local rival. Fans were asked to bring canned goods to help supply the shelves of Manna FoodBank. It was a successful event.
Upper school English students occasionally get to dress up. Sue Ellen Sims and her students participated in their annual Canterbury Trek where they sup on food, take a pilgrimage, and enjoy the Canterbury tales. Thanks to Ms. Sims for the photos.
Key students recently enjoyed a buddy activity with older students working with younger students on some holiday projects. They were making holiday cards for "Meals on Wheels" participants. Thanks to Anna Weaver for this next set of photos.
The athletic department sponsored a visit by Stacey Enos earlier this month. Ms. Enos played soccer for UNC-Chapel Hill from '82 through '86 where she helped Carolina win three national championships. She played for the US Women's National Team in '85, '86, and '87. She is currently Director of Athletics and Adventure Sports at Warren Wilson College and runs a program in the city that works with disadvantaged girls in the Asheville area. Ms. Enos (center) is surrounded by some of our sports stars.
Ms. Verno's second graders at the Key sponsored a contest this week to guess the number of cotton balls it would take to cover "Frosty."
This third grader was the lucky winner. Robert guessed the exact number of "snowballs" it took to cover Frosty—340. He won the little snowman he proudly holds.
What are the upper school students doing this period of high excitement? Taking exams of course!
But don't worry about them. They've been taking time to celebrate. Marbie Kollath's upper school art students all got the opportunity to create gingerbread houses in art class and they had a blast. Thanks to Ms. Kollath for these photos.
