Out & About Every so often we'll bring you a series of photos of some of the ordinary and not-so-ordinary events that take place at Carolina Day School every day. We're a busy place. Carolina Day is making an effort to have students spend more time outdoors this year in formal and not-so-formal activities. These second graders love engineering and building forts from materials they collect from our woods.
This upper school student shows off a purchase from the every-so-often bake sale. The money raised will one day help fund financial aid.
We've had a couple of courtyard concerts so far this year. The first was by a band of UNC-A students named "Bear Down Easy." Students enjoyed listening to the music while having lunch in the lower school courtyard.
These pre-kindergarten teachers are dressed like this for a purpose! They're about to go visit the fourth graders and explain a little about the buddy program and to discuss all the events the two groups will do together during the year.
And part of their visit was the presentation of these husky toy puppies to the fourth graders. The fourth graders will then present them to their PK buddies as they begin their study of the Iditarod.
These eighth graders were testing parachutes they designed and built in science class.
The upper school student council sponsored a very successful American Red Cross blood drive. Several students rolled up their sleeves to participate as well as faculty, staff, and parents. Your next opportunity for an on-campus blood donation will be this coming spring.
And you thought it was by magic. Although it seems to happen all by itself, a dedicated group of volunteers make sure the two signs around campus get updated with current happenings. Here Jean Bryan adds a message to the Key School sign.
Each year Carolina Day emphasizes one of four character education tenets. On this day several students from the Upper School came over to the Lower School to present their personal experiences of "a thirst for personal excellence" to the younger boys and girls. It was quite impressive.
Fall Fitness Day was held for lower school students a few weeks ago. These photos were taken on that beautiful fall day.
We're sure you heard about National Denim Day, a program that raises money to help fund breast cancer research. CDS received great press in both print and broadcast media. We raised over $5,300 for this worthy cause. All four divisions participated.
And these two boys, both middle school students, are happy to don their jeans for this good cause.
Mrs. Corbin, lower school music teacher, effectively combines music and science for these kindergarten students as they put on a spectacle about the planets. You needed to be there to understand what all was going on--but it was quite a show!
In your December issue of Bell Notes you will read about an incredible donation to the upper school science department by parent Larry Manofsky. In the meantime, you can ask some of Mrs. Bartsch's students about what they discovered when they unpacked all the boxes.
Steve Longenecker, former CDS teacher, was on campus recently to introduce Frightful to the fifth graders. Steve is a federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator and was sharing his experiences and this peregrine falcon with the students. The kids will be spending next Friday on their annual "My Side of the Mountain Day" which is based on the book My Side of the Mountain which tells the story of a boy who lives by himself in the mountains for a year and tames a falcon.
The sixth graders enjoyed a visit by Mayor Terry Bellamy. She fielded well-researched questions about the future of Asheville from our well-prepared students. Several upper school students came to sit in on the "town meeting."
Prior to Fall Family Night the middle and upper school students held a rousing pep rally to stir our athletes to victory.
These PK students were spotted emerging from PE class still looking pretty spiffy in their CDS attire.
You can't tell it from this photo, but all of these first graders were showing off missing front teeth. I imagine several more are missing teeth by now.
Patty Baer and Anne Imes, two of our PK assistants, are dressed for for their recent pajama day happening.
